Technical Tutoring is no longer in the business of offering one-on-one tutoring.  The business closed in 1998 after the proprietor began work in the computer industry.  Instead, the results of two decades of teaching and tutoring are slowly being posted on these pages.  Access to the pages is free for all interested parties.  All work here is copyrighted, so feel free to make personal use of the help pages but do not sell, package, transmit, nor plagarize any of the documents here.  Permission for reasonable personal use as a study aid is hereby granted, but any use beyond that, including but not limited to plagarism, unauthorized copying or sale is forbidden.  All rights reserved.  All material (c) Phil Otken 1996-2005.

12 May 2004    Baby Jack now 16 months old.  Papa has finally been able to get back to publishing math pages, starting with another Speed Arithmetic page, Speed Arithmetic - Multiplication by Six .  More to come!

15 November 2002      In response to the growing home school movement, I have begun adding pages intended for younger students (age 9 and above).  Children so young don't quite have the reading or attention skills to benefit from how-to websites, so the new material is aimed at parents and other interested adults.  I've started with math, in particular, the very excellent speed arithmetic devised by Jacow Trachtenburg.  Conceived while a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps, Dr. Trachtenburg created a method which has been proven to aid even very math-challenged kids do complicated arithmetic fast and accurately.  This method is also suitable for adults wishing to self-educate.  I've included a link to get the original text from Amazon.  I'm delighted that it is still available.  Please read the Introduction carefully - as with all educational materials, it is wise to find out as much as possible prior to committing your kids to this or any other non-standard math methods.  I think the methods are wonderful, and remove much of the drudgery associated with learning math.

Suggestion box:    Got a math, chemistry or physics topic you routinely need to see in example format?  Science teachers, college professors, tutors and other education professionals are welcome to suggest topics they see over and over again and prefer not to do themselves.  If I get enough demand for a particular topic, I'll put it at the top of my list.  Be advised that there can be a rather long time lag, but by all means, let me know and I'll do what I can to get some reasonable material up as soon as I can manage it.  These pages can take as long as eight hours each, which is often all the free time I can find in a month, so please exercize patience.    Students: it will normally take much longer for me to publish a suggested topic than you can wait.  Sorry!  You are welcome to tell your teachers about this site and have them suggest topics.  Offers of financial incentives, while always welcome, cannot change the amount of free time available (unless you happen to be very wealthy, love these pages,  want to see more, and are prepared to donate without attaching conditions :).

Notes on recommended books:  I was a college student once.  I spent years before I graduated really hating the way professors often forgot to include enough graduated problems.  I  just wanted to work my way up the knowledge ladder and perform on their tests.  It wasn't possible with the materials at hand at the time.  Because of that I spent years teaching others, and authored this website.  When I was a tutor, I almost always recommended Schaum's Outlines to my students because they were inexpensive, light on theory, heavy on worked out problems, and readily available almost everywhere.  Furthermore, there is probably a Schaum's Outline available for nearly every subject an undergraduate could hope for, and a few that are appropriate for graduate students as well.  I used them in college, had good results, and my students who used them also had good results.  Ordering from Amazon is safe, but requires a credit card.  The books I recommend usually cost between $8 and $15, and just for disclosure's sake, I'll make about fifty cents when you order a book from this site.   Typically, the books will be delivered to your door in about five business days.   If you are reasonably organized, and do your planning at the beginning of the semester or before, you can order all the work books you might need and have them delivered to you for less than the price of a single new text book (what a ripoff textbooks can be!).  The books I recommend are good, and in almost all cases I actually used them myself.

Usage notes:  I typically avoid answering e-mails that look like someone is asking me for help on their homework.  On occasion, I'll answer a question from someone who is asking something interesting, and is clearly not angling for easy answers to homework.  Please try to keep that in mind when writing.  On the other hand, if you think you have found a mistake on any of these pages, I definitely do want you to send me an e-mail.  Please be as specific as possible.  Alert readers have thus far found 3 errors in six years and I'm very grateful for their attention to detail.

Linking:  You are welcome to link to these pages.  They have been up since May 1996, and are likely to be stable for some time to come.  If you want trade links, drop me an e-mail with the URL of the link to these pages (the link will be checked) and I'll reply with the URL of the link from these pages to yours.  It is best (but certainly not required) if you have already registered your site with the current search engines, as that will allow both of us to add some traffic to each other's sites.

Plagarism:    It does happen, and has happened at least twice to me.  The offenders were amazed that they got caught (doh!).
