Recruiters, third-party people, direct employers: everything you need to know to decide whether or not to call me is on this page, my resume, the details page, or that information is not available. Please read these notes and my resume carefully.  Doing so will save us both time. Failure to do so will very likely result in my not wanting to talk to you.  I have recently added a page of details about recent experience. Contact Info can be found here.

1.  Full-time opportunities.  I currently have a full time, well-paid job. I am always willing to consider job or project offers, however, please have respect for my time and yours and do not contact me for jobs that fail to meet the following criteria.

In particular, I am not interested in:
UNIX System Administration,
entry- or mid- level Oracle DBA,
Microsoft (dot Net, SQL Server, COM, DCOM, MFC) Programming nor Administration,
Network Administration.
Stock, options, or other forms of alternative compensation (ie, no "Entrepreneur Opportunities")

Good:
a) UNIX (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, BSD) or Linux server environment; Oracle 9i or 10g databases (I avoid working on de-supported versions of Oracle and cannot guarantee satisfactory results)
b) Tolerance or enthusiasm for open source tools and methods
c) Location in Austin, TX
d) Regular, predictable working hours and environment
e) Excellent manager(s) with track record of keeping high-tech employees long-term
f)  Expected duration of employment 3+ years
g) Company or account within company has 100-1000 people, growing steadily and predictably
h) Tolerant, diverse work enviromnent with coworkers most interested in results
i)  Full medical and dental benefits
j)  Tight match between job req and my resume, with skills "to be learned" agreed upon before hire
k) I will be willing to consider management of people as part of the responsibilities for my job.
l) Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC, formerly Oracle Parallel Server)
m) Programming and Scripting. I am a Development DBA / Architect, and that is what I want to spend my time doing!
Bad:
a) Microsoft Windows as primary server environment (I have 5 years experience doing it, prefer UNIX or Linux).
b) Insistence on particular technologies used for new projects (particulary Microsoft, Borland, any legacy software)
c) Travel required.
d) Shift work or off-hours work (I will almost always refuse this)
e) Start-ups,  giant corporations, strongly inflexible job conditions, lawsuit-prone organizations
f) Short-term (less than six months) employment
g) No benefits (premium charged)
h) Rescue of partially-written, badly written, mothballed, untested software.  In most cases, it is easier and cheaper to redesign and rewrite old software.
i) Jobs with a significant component of application support. I will not consider most opportunities that require carrying a pager.

2. Project opportunities.  I am currently considering project opportunities. Nights and weekends only, remote work only (no travel). Check this page at a future time for updates to that status.

3. If a particular skill is not listed on my resume, I do not have recent working experience in that skill.  It has been typical for the last several jobs I've had to learn the core skills of the job as I work, so I do not believe lack of a particular skill set to be much of an issue over the lifetime of a job.  I have ten years of real-world experience that underline the importance of a rapid learning curve over pre-existing skills.  Since it's often hard for employers to know what Linux (thousands of programs) or Oracle (hundreds of programs) includes , for example, it's always OK to ask (a quick e-mail query will settle the matter).  There are no issues learning something new if a customer needs it; I have had to do this at every job I've ever worked.  A recently added, lengthy page of details of recent work experience may help answer questions.

4. Jobs or projects with many positive characteristics and few negative characteristics from the lists above are worth contacting me about, provided the employer is willing and able to pay for the services.  If you or your customer are prepared to discuss effective minimum compensation in at least the six figures range (this includes the value of benefits), it is worth calling me. Otherwise, please call someone else. I charge premiums to compensate for negatives - if that is a problem, please call someone else.

Current Status: Employed, Full-Time, I AM LOOKING for new employment!
